The Colossus of Rhodes is a bronze statue of the greek titan-god Helios. They people of Rhodes got the bronze from a previous battle. The construction of the Bronze statue started on the Greek Island of Rhodes in 292 BC and it took 12 years to build. Sadly the Colossus cracked at its knees during an earthquake in 226 BC. The remains were left on the ground for about 800 years until Rhodes was captured by an Arab force in 653 AD and they sold the remains to a Jewish merchant from Syria. They had to put the three thousand loads of Corinthian brass on 900 camels. The Colossus was made by a Greek Sculptor named Chares of Lindos and he built it 100 feet tall with a 49 foot tall stand. It was the tallest statue in the ancient world. The Statute of Liberty was modeled off the Colossus of Rhodes and they both mean freedom. The Colossus is also one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
